Mwatana for Human Rights issued a statement demanding the immediate release of its Field Research Assistant in Al Hudaydah Kamal Mohammed Qishrah Al Shawish who was detained in Al Hudaydah governorate. Mwatana is yet to receive any information about his fate and whereabouts.
At around 8:30 pm yesterday, Wednesday August 14, 2018, Al Shawish was detained by two armed men from Ansar Allah (Houthis) on Sanaa Street, downtown Al Hudaydah city. The two-armed men blindfolded Al Shawish and pulled him towards a gold-color car taking him to an unknown location. Up until the moment of writing this release, Mwatana has not received any information where he is or the reasons behind his detention.
Mwatana demands knowing the fate and whereabouts of Al Shawish, and asks Ansar Allah (Houthis) to immediately and unconditionally release him. Mwatana holds Ansar Allah (Houthis) responsible for his well-being and the consequences of his detention.
Since 2015 and until now, Mwatana and its staff across Yemen have been the subject of smear campaigns, threats, and arrests from Ansar Allah (Houthis), the forces loyal to Hadi government, and the Saudi-Emarati-led coalition.
Mwatana reiterates its firm commitment to standing by the victims and defending their rights and freedoms. Mwatana will not be deterred, and it will continue to document human rights violations by all parties to the conflict.
