Legal Support Newsletter | June 2025

Mwatana for Human Rights stated that it provided legal assistance, through its field team of female and male lawyers, to 381 victims who were subjected to arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture, and contributed to the release of 24 of them during June 2025.

Mwatana provided legal support to civilian victims held by the following parties: 158 victims by Ansar Allah (the Houthis), 82 victims by the Southern Transitional Council, 121 victims by forces of the internationally recognized government, 18 victims by coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, and 2 victims by the Joint Forces on the West Coast.

The victims were distributed in varying numbers across several governorates, with Aden recording the highest number (61 victims), followed by Taiz (60 victims), Amanat Al Asimah (Capital Secretariat) (52 victims), Hadramawt (48 victims), Hajjah (26 victims), Marib (23 victims), Lahj (22 victims), Shabwah (21 victims), Al-Dhale’e (17 victims), Abyan (13 victims), Sana’a (10 victims), Al Hudaydah (9 victims), Dhamar (8 victims), Amran (6 victims), Al Mahwit (2 victims), and one victim each in Raymah, Al Bayda, and the Yemeni–Saudi border areas.

During June 2025, Mwatana for Human Rights documented 79 new incidents of violations involving arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture.

Ansar Allah (the Houthis) and forces of the internationally recognized government each bear responsibility for 33 incidents of violations, the Southern Transitional Council forces for 11 incidents, and the Joint Forces on the West Coast for 2 incidents.

It is worth noting that Mwatana for Human Rights provides legal assistance through a network of female and male lawyers across various regions of Yemen to victims of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture perpetrated by different parties. The organization undertakes its efforts either in coordination with the victims’ families or on their behalf, following thorough documentation of all information related to the victim and the incident, and based on informed consent from the victims or their families.

The efforts of Mwatana’s Legal Support Team focus on ensuring procedural justice for all individuals who come into contact with law enforcement authorities, or those detained by armed formations that have become de facto authorities, with the aim of guaranteeing their full enjoyment of rights from the moment of arrest, through investigation and defense, the place and conditions of detention, and through to trial.
