"Mwatana" welcomes the Security Council's decision regarding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Mwatana for Human Rights expressed its welcome for the Security Council members' approval of a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. It called for continued efforts towards a permanent and comprehensive cessation of hostilities in the region and the prevention of a recurrence of the bloodshed that lasted for about six months.

Mwatana considered the Security Council's decision to halt the ceasefire a long-awaited first step after months of violations and horrific crimes committed by Israel against civilians in the Gaza Strip. It followed rounds of international efforts in which the United States obstructed the implementation of any previous ceasefire resolutions in the region, showing bias towards Israel.

In its session held at the United Nations headquarters in New York yesterday, the Security Council adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after the United States refrained from voting on the resolution, contrary to usual practice, which allowed its passage. Meanwhile, Washington objected to a request made by the Russian representative during the session to add the phrase "permanent ceasefire" to the draft resolution.

Mwatana urges the United Nations, the free world, and human rights organizations to swiftly contain the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, provide urgent assistance to the victims, and initiate investigations into the heinous crimes committed by the Israeli entity against Palestinian civilians, which amount to acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing.
