Human Rights Calls to Halt Arms Exports, Withdraw All Forms of Support, Impose Sanctions, and Activate International Mechanisms
Challenges of Accountability Efforts for European Arms in the Yemen War
Six years into the Saudi-led coalition’s war against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, Mwatana, the organization that Radhya co-founded, has documented hundreds of abuses by all sides.
To end the cycles of violence in Yemen, the warring parties must know they will be held accountable for violations.
Mwatana for Human Rights participates in the events of the 42nd session of Human Rights Council during September 2019 held in Geneva, and discusses the importance of strengthening the mandate of GEE.
“Radhya and her colleagues face risks every day to uncover the human costs of war. For leading this work, Radhya Almutawakel deserves recognition as one of the truly courageous among us.” Senator Bernie Sanders.
America pledged millions in humanitarian aid for Yemen. But if U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates continue, American bombs may reach Yemeni civilians before American aid will. Peace in Yemen is possible. But to achieve it, Congress must act.
Almutawakel: The warring parties continue their violations depending on the absence of accountability and protection of their allies, the European states should stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
“It is a huge honor to welcome Osamah to the Human Rights Institute,” says Alex Moorehead, “We will work with him to deepen and strengthen connections between Yemeni and U.S. human rights organizations.”
Radhya Almutawakel: We felt happy and proud to be chosen by a respectful Foundation. In spite of the very big differences on the situation between Yemen and Turkey, we still share many similar difficulties as civil society so, thank you.
